2021 – Our Work with NHS

In 2021, we were contacted by the NHS supply chain, a global supplier of medical devices and medical solutions. The OEM were looking to create more inflatable mattresses used by the NHS in acute wards.

Previously, the mattresses used by the NHS were prone to punctures, and scalpel slashes when an emergency occurred or a wound needed dressing. This would cause deflation whilst the patient was still on it. The OEM was looking to create a mattress that could withstand any potential punctures or slashes, yet they still needed the inflatable element, as this prevents potential bed sores for long-care patients.

The Task

We were tasked with designing a test unit that would examine five different mattress types at once. This would check for leaks, and report if the mattresses had a leak greater than 5mmHg via a graphical interface.

The unit required a barcode scanner where individual user login details can be applied. They also needed a SQL table where data about the mattress could be kept, including the date and time of trial, the last time it was tested, and whether it passed or failed the test.

The SQL table also had to be able to retrieve data when a mattress is scanned by the barcode scanner, so the exact mattress type is automatically selected, and all information is pulled into memory, including the last time it was tested, whether it passed or failed the test, and which users tested the mattress.

Our work providing these testing facilities has ensured that companies like NHS can ensure patients receive safe and effective care.
